In 2002 several of my clients had been asking me to help them to draw up a budget for them to assist in managing their finances. After looking at what was currently available and finding nothing that really suited their needs, I decided to write my own budget programme with the assistance of a programming mate of mine. The brief being, simple to use with the ability to track both income and expenses and notify of upcoming bills.

The next thing was to figure out why people didn’t budget and what were the main reasons. After some exhaustive research I discovered most people, after they started, only continued for a few weeks before it all got too hard. They began with all the best intentions but just lost interest. This is where I devised and wrote, along with another friend, a budget training manual which looks at things like, the psychology of money, what kind of a spender/saver you are and probably the most important thing, how to set achievable goals for your finances.

Having developed the course and the software I felt there was still something missing. That’s when I came up with the idea of each client having a budget coach to do their initial training, then to remain in contact with the client to ensure that they stayed on track and were working towards achieving their goals. The budget coach forms the cornerstone of the package and binds it all together.

One of the more interesting things I discovered was that in asking people why they didn’t budget it was that in most circumstances the parents of the people I interviewed had never budgeted either. So to change this and break the cycle I have designed and written a children’s package which will be available from the website for all primary and secondary school children to have access to in the near future at no cost.

Greg Bell CFP Dip FP AFPA founder and CEO of ihatebudgets Pty Ltd has been involved in financial planning for over twenty five years. Greg’s previous roles have included that of State Manager for Financial Wisdom and Manager, Financial Planning with National Australia Bank. He has written courses for, and lectured in, Financial Planning at University of Sydney in the Continuing Education Department. Greg’s extensive experience in financial planning, and contact with clients and others over the years, convinced him of the importance of budgeting to the achievement of financial goals. He was also acutely aware that many people either did not know how to set up a budget, or lacked the discipline to continue with one - and that budgeting tools on the market were not user-friendly, nor were they designed to encourage the purchaser to actually use the product.
